(Throw) Pillow Talk

When it comes to arranging throw pillows the possibilities really are endless. However, with a plethora of different textures, colors, sizes and patterns to choose from, selecting the right combination for your space can be a tad overwhelming…

Throw pillows are one of those things that my clients have a really hard time pulling together on their own. So, I put together a little cheat sheet for you all to help you select + arrange throw pillows like a pro!

Size Matters

If you’re working with a standard size sofa (which is typically 70"-84") a good rule of thumb is to start with a 20” square pillow and add up to two complimentary sizes for variety.

How many is too many?

With all the cute pillows out there, it can be really easy to over do it.

When it comes to how many and what size to use on various sofas, here is a cheat sheet: For loveseats, 3-4 pillows is usually the sweet spot. For a standard sized sofa, 4-5. For a sectional 5-7. For a more modern take on sofa and loveseat try a long lumbar or a grouping of 3 varied sizes in the middle.

Quantity is the key. You don’t want to have so many pillows that you have to remove them from your sofa every time you use it. The biggest push back I get regarding throw pillows are from husbands or partners who don’t want to remove 4 pillows just to sit on their sofas, which is totally understandable! Remember that functionality is just as important as aesthetics.

How to Choose the Right Colors + Patterns

The current color scheme of your living will determine what color palette you’ll want to go with. Select your main color that will act as an anchor for your overall look. I like to mix a solid (fabric or leather), an organic (texture or floral) and a small scale pattern, geometric or stripe. Here are 2 examples of pairings that work well together.

Faux fur, velvet and leather–oh my!

When selecting pillow covers, variation in texture is just as important, if not more so, than variation in color. When different textures are paired together, they add depth and intrigue to your space. Here are a few you can choose from…

  • faux fur

  • velvet

  • leather

  • linen

  • silk

  • chunky knit wool

You’ll also want to consider how all these fabrics will feel to the touch. This is my second biggest push back from husbands or partners is the way that the covers feel. I ADORE Kilim pillows for their beautiful, artistic look, but they tend to be scratchy on bare skin. So, having this in the family room might be an issue.

Things to avoid…

  • All geometric patterns together

  • All the same scale of pattern

  • All the same material

Also…always get rid of the pillows that come with your sofa.

All pillows are not created equal…

The quality of your pillow inserts can make all the difference in the world!

I stay away from polyester pillow inserts. Over time these will disappoint you. They do not wash well and become lumpy and misshapen. Do yourself a favor and invest in a nice set of down/feather filled pillows. These are MUCH more comfortable and can truly elevate your lounging experience–trust me!

These pillow inserts by ComfyDown or Crate & Barrel are of great quality and affordable. If you’re allergic to feathers, try these down alternative pillows or these synthetic down pillow inserts by Pillowflex.

Another pro-tip…

Use pillow inserts that are 2” larger than the size of your pillow covers to make them appear extra plump and fluffy.

I hope this little cheat sheet helped you pair pillows like a pro! Remember this is meant to be used as a guide, not to hinder your creative process. Mix your colors, shapes, prints and materials until you’ve found what looks best to you.
